NAS Article at About.com

Nice article about Network Attached Storage.

-------------------

Last week I got an old HP Pavilion (700mhz) at Value Village for $24. Got it home found out it doesn't run. Coated with a lot of brown dust on the PSU and the CPU cooling fan and heatsink. The fan in the power supply didn't turn freely so I suppose it had a meltdown. Want to find a used PSU to put in it's place to see if maybe that was the only part that failed. Should be able to find usable replacement at the thrift stores for less than $5. Don't want to spend more because the CPU may well have gone sour also due to the excess heat it must have been exposed to.

NAS

"I bought a NAS box. It runs Linux. It uses the Reiser file system. It encrypts the drive. It supports CIFS as well as NFS. It uses net time servers. It can do raid with USB drives. It uses a lot less power. It has access control lists for the shares. If stolen the data is secure.

The best part, it's a turnkey solution for under $300 including a much bigger hard drive..."
